Agricultural and Resource Economics for Sustainable Development in Africa: In Honor of Professor Rashid Hassan
The African Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AfJARE) invites contributions to a special issue recognizing the scholarly and institution-building legacy of the late Professor Rashid Hassan — while advancing new research on Africa’s challenges of climate change, food security, natural-resource management and sustainable development.
Motivation
The special issue is in honor of the late Professor Rashid Hassan, who was the founding Chief Editor of the Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AfJARE). Professor Rashid Mekki Hassan was a distinguished agricultural, environmental and resource economist who made major contributions to African scholarship, research capacity and sustainable development. Prof. Hassan was the founding Director of the Center for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA) at the University of Pretoria (UP). He helped build African research capacity in the field of environmental, agricultural and resource economics. He received several awards and international recognition, which includes election to the US National Academy of Sciences and receipt of the Kenneth Boulding Award. His research spanned climate change, agriculture, water resources, environmental valuation and natural-resource management. This Special Issue of AfJARE will be done to recognize his scholarly and institution-building legacy while advancing research on Africa’s challenges of climate change, food security, natural-resource management and sustainable development.
Theme: Agricultural and Resource Economics for Sustainable Development in Africa: New Evidence, Methods and Policy Perspectives
The theme is cast broadly, allowing contributions from agricultural economists, environmental and resource economists, development economists, and quantitative policy analysts. The aim is to reflect Professor Hassan’s intellectual approach to research, which treated agricultural production and rural livelihoods as part of larger economic and ecological systems rather than as isolated sectors. This should encourage researchers and scholars across the spectrum of specialization to ask pertinent research questions that build on the legacy of the late Professor Rashid Hassan’s work.
